Storm Safety
Severe weather can occur suddenly. Follow these tips to stay safe before, during, and after a storm.
We’re committed to providing reliable, uninterrupted electrical service to our members. But sometimes, storms can cause power outages. When Mother Nature damages our electrical system, the safety of our members and employees matters most. We encourage you to use the resources below to prepare and protect your family before, during and after a storm or major outage. We also want to remind you that if you see downed or damaged power lines, stay back and call us immediately at 319-377-1587.
Advance planning for severe storms or other emergencies can reduce stress and keep you and your family safe. Stay informed of restoration efforts and other important co-op news and information on our Facebook page and website, and visit the National Weather Service storm safety center for additional storm safety information.
Before the storm
- Charge your cell phone and portable chargers.
- Sign up for local emergency alerts on your phone.
- Keep a flashlight, radio, and extra batteries available.
- Know where your main breaker disconnect is located.
- Unplug sensitive electrical equipment.
Medical Devices
If you or a family member require medical devices powered by electricity or medicine that requires refrigeration, talk with your medical provider about your power outage plan. Prepare now by making alternate arrangements if needed. We also encourage members with special needs to make a plan for emergencies before they happen, and identify an emergency support network and preparedness resources.

During the storm
- If you experience a power outage, report it by calling 1-888-271-6250. This number is for outages only. Calls answered 24 hours a day.
- Unplug as many appliances as possible to prevent damage from potential power surges during restoration.
- If you are outside, do not touch or drive over any power lines. Always assume that a downed line is energized.
After the storm
- Once power is restored, plug in appliances one at a time.
- Immediately report any downed lines or damaged utility equipment to us, and keep others away from the area. Always treat downed lines as dangerous.
- Do not attempt to assist utility crews, as your efforts may hinder their restoration and safety efforts.
